Special events

Check out our special community events running alongside our soup kitchens – and join us for the next one.

While we are focussed on sustainable nourishment for the nation to make a real difference to the future of our children, we also host bigger events on special occasions to bring communities together to share nutritious meals with those who need it most.

From our 67 minutes (and much more) for Mandela Day to sandwich-making marathons, this is what we get up to to make a difference.

Mandela Day 2020

Every year, numerous events and activities take place all across the country to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela. People from all walks of life are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to do something good.

At Ladles of Love, we attempted something incredible: to break the World Record for most sandwiches made in an hour. Volunteers from all over came together on the day and, using ingredients sponsored by SASKO and Rhodes Quality Jam, absolutely smashed the previous record of 107 418 sandwiches made in an hour. Our amazing volunteers managed to turn up the love and turn out a whopping 304 583 sandwiches in just one hour!

If you’re wondering what you can do on Mandela day, or if schools are looking for ideas on how to participate, get in touch and let’s make an even bigger impact next year.

Sarmiethon 2020

Ladles of Love founder Danny Diliberto undertook a mammoth task in September 2020 to raise much-needed funds while also feeding the vulnerable. Setting up a pop-up trailer at the Sea Point Promenade, he raised awareness by making sandwiches for those in need for 24 hours straight.

To raise funds, raffle tickets were sold in advance that gave supporters the chance to join him in making sandwiches for a 30 minute slot. The #Sarmiethon was live-streamed on our Facebook page and raised almost R90 000!

Christmas with the Homeless 2019

Our annual Christmas lunch in partnership with the Central Methodist Mission serves seated meals to more than 600 homeless people. This is, however, no regular soup kitchen. We go to great lengths to share the love and joy of Christmas with those who don’t otherwise get to experience it.

Along with a delicious meal of roast chicken, veggies, potatoes and an indulgent dessert, each guest also receives a gift and enjoys table service from our volunteers, all accompanied by live music from our band.

Mandela Day 2019

Our Mandela Day event for 2019 was spectacular in so many ways. Together with Rainbow Experiential Marketing and 800 incredible volunteers who committed their 67 minutes to help, we erected a 300 m2 kitchen tent from where we served nutritious meals to 1 200 vulnerable people. We also set up one of the largest pop-up clothing stores in Cape Town for Mandela Day, where we helped clothe these people in need.

That’s not all. At the same time, our volunteers prepared 3 000 litres of hearty soup, which we then distributed to other non-profit organisations to support their food programmes.

If you want to help facilitate the change you want to see in this country, volunteer for our next Mandela Day event and experience the loads of love we give and receive in our communities.
