Dear Ladles Supporter
Think Your Food Scraps Don’t Matter?
Think Again.
As food waste continues to be one of the largest contributors to landfill emissions, every bucket of scraps collected through Feed The Soil makes a difference.
When food waste is sent to landfill, it breaks down without oxygen and produces methane, a greenhouse gas now widely recognised as a super-pollutant because it traps far more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide over the short term. By diverting food scraps from landfill and turning them into a valuable soil amendment through bokashi composting, we help reduce emissions while returning nutrients to the soil where they belong.
Now let’s break down some myths about bokashi composting:
Myth #1: Composting food scraps always smells bad.
Bokashi is a fermentation process, not traditional composting. When done correctly, your bucket should have a slightly sweet, pickled smell rather than a rotten odour.
Myth #2: You can’t compost cooked food.
One of the benefits of bokashi is that it can process many food items that are difficult to compost conventionally, including cooked food, dairy and small amounts of meat.
Myth #3: Composting attracts pests.
A properly sealed bokashi bucket keeps food scraps contained, making it far less attractive to pests than exposed food waste.
Myth #4: My contribution is too small to matter.
Every kilogram diverted from landfill counts. Together, our community is helping build healthier soils while reducing waste and emissions.
Team update:
We’re excited to share that the Feed The Soil team is growing. This month, we welcomed Mandla, a driver dedicated to strengthening our collection operations and helping us better support the growing number of households and businesses choosing to keep their food waste out of landfill.
As our reach expands, so does our impact. Every new team member, volunteer, participant and bucket collected contributes to a more circular food system , where valuable nutrients are returned to the soil rather than lost as waste. It’s encouraging to see our community growing alongside the movement to turn food waste into a resource.
Bring your food scraps to one of our community pop-up collection points:
Tuesday
Blue Route Mall, Tokai
08:30 – 12:30
Wednesday
Sunset Beach, Sea Point
08:30 – 12:30
Thursday
Van Riebeeck Park, Oranjezicht
08:30 – 12:30
Friday
Community Outdoor Gym (between Erin Road and Campground Road), Rondebosch

Thank you for being part of the solution. Every bucket helps us keep valuable nutrients out of landfill and in our soils, where they can support healthy food production for generations to come.
Stay Rooted,
Micaela and the Feed the Soil team 💚
