Tomorrow is Friday 21 March and South Africa’s Human Right’s Day – the most important day on our calendar. Why? Because, until such time as we have righted the wrongs and the people in our communities can survive, thrive and live with dignity, we cannot rest.
Righting the wrongs is daunting. As a relatively small organisation, it is tough to know which way to go. Just over a year ago, we went back to the drawing board and decided to focus on the most vulnerable, the little children under six years old. For the simple reason that – when you see the conditions these children live in, you cannot ‘unsee it’. It is a humanitarian crisis and inconceivable that in 2025 our little children are living like they do.
The challenge was: ‘How on earth do we fund and provide nutrition to enough preschool children and teachers to make a difference?’ Miraculously, we had a call from Dialogue PR offering to help us, and being experts in communication, we knew this was the perfect place to start. Tracy Jones, Jeremy Crowder and their team headed up by Cara Diener, held a big think-tank to find a solution. We are incredibly grateful to all at Dialogue, as this is how the awesome ‘Feed the Future’ fundraising campaign concept was born.
All we had to do was reach out to individuals to ‘sponsor a child’ or corporate companies to ‘pair with a preschool’. We are incredibly grateful, to you our supporters. Over the past six months, individual donors and companies have stepped up in the most amazing way.
The first company to sign up was our long-term partner,Coronation Fund Managers, who after evaluating our programme, committed immediately. A big thank you to Wisahl Ganief and Nomfundo Kafesu, who choose to pair up Little Conquerors situated in Joe Slovo and provided us with this statement from Coronation.
“The early years shape a child’s future, but too many barriers stand in the way of learning – one of the most fundamental being hunger. As corporate citizens, we have a role to play in creating lasting change. Through thoughtful action, such as supporting good nutrition in a preschool like Little Conquerors, we can help lay the foundation for a generation that is better equipped to learn, grow and thrive.”
We invited Nomfundo meet the principal and children at Little Conquerors in Joe Slovo as part of our onboarding process. Watching Andiswa and Nomfundo connect was a beautiful sight to see and we believe, in time, this powerful partnership will uplift the community.
As we navigate our daily lives – at work, in our communities, schools and homes – let us speak out on the human rights we want to see addressed in South Africa.
