A week ago, I was chatting with my manager about food waste.
I’ll be honest, I had never really thought much about it before. Like many people, I saw vegetable peels, coffee grounds and leftovers as exactly what they were called, waste. Something you throw away without a second thought.
Then she asked me to think about it differently.
What if it isn’t wasted at all? That simple question stayed with me.
Since joining Feed the Soil, I’ve realised that we’re not entirely in the business of collecting food waste. We’re in the business of changing the way people see waste. Because the moment food scraps leave your kitchen. It becomes part of a regenerative cycle that quietly transforms communities every single day. Food waste that would have ended up in landfill is instead transformed into nutrient-rich compost. And that matters because nearly 40% of South Africa’s arable land is already degraded. Healthy soil isn’t something we can take for granted.
One thing I’ve come to appreciate while working at Feed the Soil is the difference between being sustainable and being regenerative. Sustainability asks, “How can we reduce our impact?” Regeneration asks, “How can we leave things better than we found them?” That’s the heart of what we do.
We don’t just keep food waste out of landfill or reduce carbon emissions, we transform it into something that restores life. The compost we produce helps rebuild healthy soil, allowing it to regenerate naturally, support stronger harvests and continue nourishing communities for years to come. To me, that’s what makes this work so special. We’re not simply sustaining a system, we’re helping it heal.
It is easy to think that sustainability is made up of big, headline grabbing moments. But I’ve learnt that it’s actually built on ordinary ones. One bucket swap, one handful of compost, and one conversation that changes the way you see the world.
Mine started with my manager asking me to look at food waste differently. Now I can’t look at it any other way.
