Dear Ladles Supporter
Did you know that the Western Cape Government has introduced a ban which prohibits 100% of organic waste from reaching landfills in the Western Cape, that will be in effect from 2027? Yes, you heard that right, all of it.
We are running out of space – landfill space that is – and our Government is reacting accordingly. Organic waste management plans were introduced way back in 2022, with ambitions to divert 50% of organic waste from landfills. This kicked us off in the direction towards embracing more sustainable methods of waste disposal before finding ourselves in serious trouble.
From next year we’ll be kicking into high gear, and diverting 100% of organic waste from reaching landfills across the province means that we will need everyone’s cooperation. This includes individuals, households, restaurants, businesses, industries – the list goes on. The whole lot of us will need to find alternative ways of disposing of our food scraps, garden refuse, any animal waste, and any other materials that can be broken down naturally. Good thing Feed the Soil has an already existing food waste collection system underway!
FTS provides services for households and restaurants to dispose of the food waste that they accumulate safely and sustainably, with a guarantee that all of this ‘waste’ will be utilised by way of being processed into compost and donated to farmers in the Cape Flats. Not only do we provide waste collection services, but we also transform organic waste into a valuable natural resource.
Organic waste is an integral component of our circular waste management model and serves as the input, which is processed into compost, which is used to grow the vegetables that we sell and that you purchase at our pop-ups. Our approach confronts more than the issue of diverting harmful organic waste disposal, and provides a solution for how to use this natural resource to the fullest.
While the ban may sound daunting, we see it as an exciting development for the Western Cape as well as South Africa as a whole. We believe that this initiative will spread further and we can strive towards a more sustainable future as a country. Furthermore, we see this as an opportunity to grow the FTS community and come together for the sake of our planet’s future.
Stay rooted,
Feed the Soil team 💚
