Dear Ladles Supporter
There is something powerful about working together. When people from different backgrounds, with different skills and different experiences, come together around a shared purpose, something bigger than any one person can happen. This is something we get to experience every month through our Feed The Soil volunteer days, held on the last Wednesday of every month at one of the farms in our network.
Getting our hands dirty
For many of us, it is easy to walk into a shop, pick up a bunch of vegetables and forget everything that happened before that moment.
But food does not simply appear on a shelf.
There are people who prepare the soil, plant the seeds, water the crops, manage weeds, protect plants, harvest the produce and do all of this while working with whatever resources they have available.
Spending a day on the farm gives you a very different appreciation for that work.
It’s more than just a day on the farm 👨🌾
Our volunteer days are about working alongside our farmers. We learn from them, they get an extra pair of hands, and together we get things done that might otherwise take much longer.
There is something deeply grounding about doing physical work alongside other people. You start with a job that needs to be done, you each pick up a tool, and before long, the beds are cleared, the weeds are gone and the farm looks a little different because everyone contributed. It is a little reminder that we are stronger when we work as a team.
And perhaps more importantly, it creates connection.
Our volunteers get to know the farmers behind the food they grow. Farmers get to share their knowledge, challenges and experiences. And we all leave with a better understanding of what it takes to build a more resilient local food system. When enough people do those small things together, they start to become something much bigger.
We believe that building a better food system is not something any one organisation, farmer or individual can do alone. It takes farmers, volunteers, communities, businesses and consumers all playing a part.
Different hands. One purpose.
This is your reminder that on the last Wednesday of every month, you will have the opportunity to spend time on the farms, support our farmers and learn more about where our food comes from.
If you’ve ever wanted to get your hands dirty, learn more about community farming or simply spend a few hours doing something meaningful with good people, we’d love to have you join us.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply come together, roll up our sleeves and get to work.
