This Mother’s Day, we are reminded of the extraordinary power of mothers to nurture, protect, and uplift even in the most unimaginable circumstances.
Because of your monthly support, mothers in vulnerable communities are not standing alone. You are standing with them, helping to create spaces where children are nourished, cared for, and given the chance to dream beyond their current reality.
South Africa recently marked Freedom Day, and as we approach Mother’s Day this weekend, we are reminded that for many of the children and mothers we serve, the promise of freedom and safety remains out of reach.
Yolanda Jones our Programme Director shares a deeply concerning story with us: Rooikappie Educare, one of the centres supported through our Nourish Our Children programme, is in a community deeply affected by ongoing gangsterism. Last Tuesday, the centre was forced to close its doors when intense gunfire erupted between rival gangs, placing the children and staff directly in harm’s way. The centre sits between opposing territories, making it particularly vulnerable during outbreaks of violence.
For the children, this was not just a disruption to their day, it was a deeply distressing experience. Young children were exposed to the sounds of gunfire, creating fear and anxiety at an age where they should feel safe, nurtured, and protected. For the staff, many of whom are mothers themselves, the responsibility of shielding the children while navigating their own fear was overwhelming. The holes in the windowpanes, and pierced poles in the play area, remain a reminder of these harsh realities.
Beyond this incident, ongoing violence continues to impact attendance, disrupt routines, and threaten the stability that children need to grow and learn. For this Centre its crossfire, for others its protection fees, yet for others its the threat of losing it all. Through Nourish Our Children, we aim to provide not only consistent nutrition, but a sense of safety, care, and dignity in environments where these are often uncertain. Helping these children grow strong will ensure a brighter future away from violence, threats, and instability, and as they have once been supported, may one day become a place of safety for others who follow.
In communities like these, a daily meal is more than nourishment, it is a lifeline, a moment of hope, and an act of love.
This is the difference you are making. Every meal you help provide is a moment of comfort, every contribution is a gesture of solidarity from one mother to another, and every act of generosity strengthens a circle of care that reaches far beyond what we can see.
This Mother’s Day, we invite you to continue walking this journey with us. By supporting mothers in communities where the challenges are inconceivably tough, you are helping to build safer, stronger futures for children who deserve every opportunity to thrive.
Happy Mother’s Day to you all!
With gratitude and appreciation.
