Dear Ladles Supporter
Today marks the fifth episode of our Heroes of Hope series, shedding light on the wonderful women and carers of preschool children in our underserved communities. Charlene Flemmer, principal and owner of Honey Bee Educare, shares her story as a dedicated educator in Dunoon, Cape Town.
“I grew up in the small Eastern Cape town of Middelburg, never having had the opportunity to attend an early learning centre myself. But from a young age, I discovered my love for teaching and helping others. Every afternoon, I would help younger children with their homework. Little did I know that those humble afternoons would lay the foundation for the journey I am on today.
As a teenage mom, I could not afford to send my daughter to preschool and watching her struggle to adapt to an English-speaking school opened my eyes to a need for an Educare within my community. We started as a small daycare and gradually grew into Honey Bee Educare, offering aftercare and eventually a Grade R class.
I’ve faced health challenges, financial difficulties and limited space, but I continued educating myself and working towards creating better opportunities for children. I completed my Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications and encouraged my employees to further their studies too.
When Ladles of Love came into our lives four years ago, Honey Bee Educare was at its lowest and on the brink of closing its doors. Danny arrived when we needed support most, becoming a light that helped us shine brighter again. Since then, we have experienced tremendous growth, from improved facilities and better resources to teachers earning good salaries and receiving support to develop professionally.
The support has also allowed us to feed and educate children whose parents cannot afford school fees, without removing them from a safe learning environment. We have even been able to provide pupils with summer uniforms and equip our teachers with resources to make learning more effective.
Ladles of Love has given us a reason to keep going and make the world better for little lives. Being a Hero of Hope strengthens my determination to never give up. My greatest joy is making a difference in children’s lives and futures, laying solid foundations so they can grow into the greatest versions of themselves.”
Nothing gives me greater meaning than looking back at how far Honey Bee Educare has come and knowing that the lives of the children we support are continually changing for the better. This would not be possible without the selfless acts of kindness from every individual who contributes to the programmes that make this work possible. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness, generosity and for helping us continue to build brighter futures for our children!
Support our programme Nourish Our Children and help us make a real impact with nutrition.
With gratitude and appreciation,
Danny and the Ladles of Love team.
