What happens in the first five years of life shapes everything that follows.

This week we want to take a few moments to share with you the extraordinary power of early childhood development. New research in South Africa confirms something we at Ladles of Love have known to be true. When young children are well nourished, cared for and supported in their earliest years, the impact on their development is profound.

Children who are fed well are more able to concentrate, to play, to communicate, and to build the confidence they need to step into learning with curiosity and courage.

Recent local studies show that simple, community based early learning programmes can significantly improve developmental outcomes for small children in a matter of months. These gains are not driven by fancy facilities or expensive equipment but by consistency, responsive care and something very foundational: nutritious meals every day. Before a child learns to read or write, their brain quite literally needs to be fed.

This is where our Nourish Our Children programme sits at the heart of early childhood development. Every day, Ladles of Love provides two healthy, nutritious meals to 14,236 young children and their teachers at early childhood centres across our communities.

These meals are not extras. They are essential building blocks for growing brains and bodies. For many children, they are the most reliable source of nourishment they receive.

With the support of our dedicated monthly donors, our goal is to grow this programme to reach 20,000 children by December 2026. That growth represents more than numbers. It represents thousands more children arriving at primary school nourished, emotionally ready and developmentally on track.

Investment in small children is one of the most powerful investments society can make. When we support children’s health and development in the early years, we are also strengthening education outcomes. We are reducing learning gaps before they open wide. We are growing little graduates who enter school with confidence, ready to participate, ready to learn, and ready to imagine futures filled with possibility.

Every healthy bowl of food served is an act of belief. Belief in the potential of a child. Belief in the idea that dignity, nourishment and care can change the course of a life.

Thank you for choosing to invest in early childhood, and for walking alongside Ladles of Love as we nourish and nurture, one small person at a time.
