“In every child, we should see the world’s promise.” – Desmond Tutu
Yesterday was World Children’s Day, one of the most important days of the year for us at Ladles of Love. Aptly, the theme for 2024 – “For every child, every right”.
The theme highlights how crucial it is to promote children’s rights, encourage dialogue around take action. Amongst other rights, children need food and shelter, and should be protected from abuse, neglect and degradation.
It breaks our hearts to see the hardships children face in communities where poverty breaks families and parents make poor choices through depression and despair. The net result is generational decay caused by trauma. It is the small children with no voice who are the victims.
Did you know that often preschools start as shelters for little ones? Usually it’s in the home of a woman, who seeing the plight of neighbourhood children, pulls them in off the street to her place of safety and feeds them. We have heard the same story over and over again, and mostly these ‘women angels’- were themselves victims as children.
Seeing what children in our communities are having to deal with daily is shocking! You read it through our stories and newspapers—maybe hear it on the radio or watch it on TV. Eventually you start becoming numb and feeling helpless. Life is tough, borderline frantic, with too much to do in too little time. Even the strongest people you know are feeling overwhelmed. ????
You ask yourself burning questions: What can I do with what little capacity I have to make a difference? How can I take action?
The time has come for ALL of us to take action.
HOW? Speak out (Share impact stories); Donate (Invest in a child); Volunteer (Use your expertise to help us).
WHAT? Nourish children. Provide preschools with enough nutritious food to serve two healthy meals daily and support the growth and education of 8,000 small children.
WHY? Feed the Future. Regular nutrition in early childhood is life-changing.
